Walking for Health

Come along and join in our organised walks around the East Riding.

Everybody is welcome to come along and join in any of the walks, which are always relaxed and friendly. There is no need to book – just turn up on the day. All walks are FREE and are of various lengths. The idea of the walks is that they help improve your health. You are encouraged to walk at your own pace, but at a pace which makes your heart beat a little faster and your breathing a little quicker. Walking is an excellent way to meet people and make new friends.

What to Wear

We go out whatever the weather so you will need waterproof (shower proof) jackets. Wear loose comfortable clothing and stout shoes/ boots as some walks may be muddy. We suggest that you bring a small bottle of water as well.

Walking Timetables

Please contact the reception of your local leisure centre to request a Walking for Health printed timetable for 2016, or download the version available below:

Nora's Story

Nora is 88 years old and has been attending Market Weighton health walks for nearly two years.

Nora is visually impaired and can only see shapes at a close distance. She walks with a white stick. However she still lives independently and regularly walks to the shops.

She initially asked the leaders if it was OK to join in the walks as she didn’t want to be a hindrance to the group. The walk leaders said straight away there was no problem at all and welcomed her into the group.

Nora loves the walks and really likes the fact that all the walkers help her during the walks by linking arms and assisting Nora with any stairs or uneven ground. She says if it wasn’t for this walking group she wouldn't be able to walk as far and she couldn’t walk in the countryside on her own. It has also kept her active and because of this she controls her high blood pressure with medicine and walking.

She has also made lots of new friends and feels so much better after the walks.
