Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia can affect all of us.
The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented, even for people who have a family history of them. An NHS Health Check can help by assessing the risk of developing these health problems and giving personalised advice on how to reduce the risk.
Hornsea Leisure Centre is now offering free NHS Health Checks to residents aged between 40 and 74 years who live in the East Riding. The checks will be carried out by trained fitness professionals in a private consultation room in the leisure centre at 9am – 8.30pm Sunday to Friday and 9am – 5pm Saturday. The checks are aimed at anyone who has not had a NHS Health Check in the past five years and who has not already been diagnosed with one of the conditions listed above.
The health check will take around 20 to 30 minutes and will cover the following aspects:
Residents undergoing the checks will be asked some simple questions about their family history, whether or not they smoke and how much alcohol they drink
Height, weight, sex, ethnicity and age will be recorded
Blood pressure will be taken
A simple blood test will check their cholesterol level
Body mass index (BMI) will be calculated. BMI is a measure of whether people are a healthy weight for their height. A high BMI can lead to type 2 diabetes
After the health check, there will be an opportunity to discuss the results with the fitness professional, who will provide personalised advice on how to lower the risk of future problems and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
