This Girl Can Running at East Riding Leisure

What is it?

Running is one of the simplest, cheapest and most effective forms of exercise. It can be done almost anytime and anywhere, and requires very little equipment. Running includes quick walking, jogging, running and racing – it really doesn’t matter how fast or slow you are. Just find what works for you, by building up gradually.

Running can be great fun and very sociable – you can run with a friend, make new friends with a beginners group, go to your local parkrun, or even head to a running club. You certainly don’t have to enter a race to enjoy running – just put on a pair of trainers and get out there doing what you want to do.

Why is it good for me?

There are many benefits:

  • Good for your heart and strengthens the bones and tendons
  • Helps improve confidence and body image
  • It increases mental functions and raises overall energy levels
  • Great way to de-stress and reduce anxiety

How much does it cost?

Running is one of the cheapest sports around, as very little kit is needed to take part and there is no additional equipment. Running itself can be completely free. You can run where you want on roads, paths and in parks for nothing. The fees to join a running group or club are also usually reasonable with many giving you the option to ‘give it a go’ before you have to commit to any subscriptions.

What equipment do I need?

The only essential item you will need to buy (if you don’t have a pair already) is a good pair of trainers. These will make your running easier and more enjoyable, and help prevent injury. They can be purchased from any running or sports shop. Most will have staff that can advise you on the right pair for you – make sure they are comfortable for you. Prices start at around £50.

You will want shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms socks and a t-shirt. In the winter you may also want a long-sleeved top. There is no need to spend a lot to start with but comfortable kit will make your running more comfortable and enjoyable.

Fitmums understands the difficulties for everyone of including regular exercise in busy lives. There are Fitmums groups located across the UK.

How Fitmums works

Shepherding accommodates mixed abilities in a group and still provides a challenge for those who are capable but supports those who need to go at a slower pace.

Couch to 5K

Couch to 5k

Couch to 5K is a running plan developed to help absolute beginners get into running. The beginners' running plan was developed by a novice runner, Josh Clark, who wanted to help his fifty-something mum get off the couch and start running too. The plan involves three runs per week, with a day of rest inbetween, with a different schedule for each of the nine weeks.
