Swimming Lessons

East Riding Leisure has been working hard, following industry and government guidance, to safely re introduce swimming lessons back onto our facilities activity programmes.

The safety of both our customers and staff has been at the centre of all our planning. With this in mind we are having to temporarily change the structure of our swimming lessons and drastically reduce the numbers we are able to accommodate. We are sorry that we cannot welcome everyone back at once and we thank everyone for their patience as we slowly re-open our activities and venues to the public safely.

We are mindful, due to lockdown, that your child may not have finished their course and are in credit for a number of swimming lesson payments. We are also aware we are unable to accommodate all swimmers and guarantee them a place on this first course.

To manage these temporary issues we have put in a procedure to coordinate both refunds and re enrolments. You will be required to email your preferred site (see email address below) stating your child's name, grade, time, day, contact number and their leisure card number (if you have one), with one of the three options below;

  • Request a refund
  • Request to re-start lessons
  • Request to be kept on the waiting list for the next course

Prior to making your decision we ask that you take a look at the information below which will highlight new restrictions and new terms and conditions that we have implemented as part of our swimming lesson recovery plan.

Due to national guidance and health and safety advice some of our facilities may not be able to offer certain swimming lessons or facilities. Please take a look at the table below which illustrates what each facility is offering.

Swimming Lessons Phase 1

  • It is proposed that lessons will start Monday 5th October 2020
  • One way systems, social distancing and breaks for additional cleaning will be in place where required.
  • Children to arrive beach ready - swimming attire under loose clothing i.e. onesie
  • One accompanying adult only per swimmer - other adults or children are not allowed entry in to the centre (see FAQ's for exceptions)
  • Arrive no earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of the lesson

Where will I find my child's leisure card number?

The leisure card number is on the front of the card at the bottom

What do I do if i don't know my child's leisure card number?

You will need to call the facility where your child is currently registered for their swimming lessons and a member of our team will find it for you.

What do I need to do if I have lost or misplaced my child's leisure card?

You will need to call the facility where your child is currently registered for their swimming lessons and a member of our team will assign you a new card

How are the places going to be allocated?

Parents must email there preferred centre and confirm that they wish their child to continue swimming lessons. The places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The amount of places available in this first phase has been reduced to ensure that social distancing rules can be in place. We apologise for this but the safety of children, parents and our staff must be our first priority.

What do you mean by Beach Ready?

Within our facilities we have limited access to changing rooms and lockers, therefore we encourage all our customers to come already ready for their activity, this includes swimming. Where possible please arrive with your child in swimwear, underneath loose fitting clothing, as entry onto pool side may not be through the changing rooms. Easily removed footwear like Crocs or slip on shoes would be a good idea as well.

The site I am attending has no changing rooms available, how do I get my child changed?

We would advise that children attend lessons Beach Ready, as outlined above. Children maybe going onto pool side at the start of a lesson or leaving pool side at the end of a lesson via different routes. We would advise you to bring towels, a 'Onesie' or dressing gown so that children can quickly wrap themselves up warmly to shower and change at home.

Why can't I watch my child in the viewing area or at the side of the pool

We are following the government guidelines on social distancing and some spectator areas do not allow for a safe distance or the correct conditions to ensure the safety of staff and customers. Therefore at some sites there will be no areas available to watch your child swim.

What time do I turn up for my child's lesson?

We recommend you arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before the lesson, if you are beach ready when you arrive you will have enough time to quickly take off the warm outer layer of clothes and be ready to start your lesson.

What if I don't want a refund, but I also don't a get a place for my child?

In this case we will put your details on a waiting list and keep the lessons you are owed as a credit against your details. We will contact you when a place becomes available.

I don't want a place, I want a refund, how long will it take?

We will endeavour to ensure all refunds are processed as soon as possible. It is important that you email your preferred centre confirming that you don't want to place your child in swimming lessons.

How long will lessons be?

Lessons will continue to be 30 minutes long. Lessons will be separated by change over periods to allow for social distancing and cleaning. Where entrance and exit routes for swimming lessons are different please speak to a member of staff if you are unsure and convey this to your child, additional assistance will be on hand.

Will my child be put back in the same grade?

We will endeavour to place children in the grade they were in before, please be aware though that children may have lost some swimming skills during this time. Movement within the lesson structure will be limited. Your child will be taught swimming skills relevant to their ability. Please encourage your child to enjoy the session.

Why do we have to accept all these changes?

Our main aim is to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID within our facilities we apologise for any inconvience this may cause please bear with us.

How will you ensure my child is safe in the water from COVID?

Chlorine levels have been increased, industry experts believe that Covid-19 is not transmissible through the chlorinated swimming pool water. Your child's swim instructor will teach from the poolside and maintain a 2m social distance. Maximum class sizes have been reduced to ensure 2m social distancing within the pool. Spacing between children has been identified in plans for each site. Equipment will not be shared between children and is cleaned between each lesson. Activities will be adapted to keep social distancing between children.

I haven't been contacted yet?

Please email the centre you used to swim at and give your child's name, age, day and time they used to swim, a member of the team will be in touch with you.

I didn't get a lesson slot?

We are introducing our swimming lesson programme in a phased approach, beginning with a reduced programme to start with. We will endeavour to offer more lessons in the future. Parents are able to register their child on a waiting list and we will contact them when places become available. We will monitor and review our systems at every stage before we roll out further lessons to ensure we maintain a safe environment in which to learn to swim.

Why are the times of the some lessons different to pre-lockdown?

To help ensure social distancing in the building and changing rooms we are staggering the start times of lessons. This has resulted in some being moved to a new day / time.

Why can't I bring my other children? Why can't I accompany my child to poolside?

Only one parent / guardian can accompany one child into the leisure centre. If this is not possible, and as a last resort i.e. no childcare is available, parents with more than one child can bring in an additional sibling. Hand sanitiser is available at multiple points throughout the leisure centres which we ask you to make use of. Centres are operating at a reduced capacity and we have to reduce the amount of people allowed into our centre at any one time.

How will I know what to do when I get there?

You will be guided by marshals and other centre staff, additional signage will be in place.

How is the centre going to be cleaned?

As expected, regular cleaning is in operation throughout opening hours and the changing cubicles will be cleaned between each groups use.

Can my child shower after their swim?

No, government guidance is not to allow the use of showers to ensure social distancing is maintained within the changing area. In addition there are no hairdryers or lockers available for use

What happens if my child needs support using the toilet?

We would ask that you encourage your child to use the toilet facilities before their lesson. However, should they need to use the facilities during the lesson a member of staff will ask you to help them and then return them back to the pool.
